Subway Slaying Suspects, Victim ID'd By NYPD

NEW YORK CITY — A trio of straphangers accused of killing a man during a fight on a Bronx subway train last week have been identified, but remain on the loose, police said.

Justin Herde, 24, Betty Cotto, 38 and Alfredo Trinidad, 42, are the three suspects seen on a D train subway surveillance camera before a deadly Feb. 23 altercation, NYPD officials said.

They assaulted another passenger — who police also publicly identified as William Alvarez, 45 — on the train and left him fatally wounded, authorities said.

“This looks like this was an isolated, random occurrence,” said NYPD Chief of Transit Michael Kemper.

The slaying was the latest in a spate of high-profile violent incidents on subway trains, including another killing in The Bronx.

Police said Alvarez was minding his own business about 5 a.m. when one of three suspects sat next to him.

An argument erupted that turned physical, with three straphangers — two men and one woman — ganging up on Alvarez, authorities said.

Alvarez suffered a fatal wound that police originally said was a gunshot, but later clarified could also be a stab. Medical examiners will determine Alvarez’s cause of death.
