The bridge conditions report showed failures in the steel bracing, according to Council documents. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has requested that the historical abutments be reused.

“Currently the weight limit has been reduced, and top planks replaced a few years ago, so it’s still able to function, but we need to begin the process to replace as soon as possible,” Council documents state.

The City has received some grant funding, and the project is estimated at about $500,000. The City is required to cover the design engineering, according to Council documents.

The final engineering and design was included in this year’s budget. Construction is expected in 2025.
