Tesla Supercharger Station In Hollywood Will Include Drive-In Theater

HOLLYWOOD, CA — Once popular across the Southland, the drive-in movie theater is now a rare breed. But Elon Musk wants to change that — with a Tesla-focused twist.

Construction is underway at a combination drive-in movie theater, restaurant and Tesla Supercharger station in Hollywood, according to reports. The new building’s unique circular shape recently began taking form as crews continue to build the structure at 7001 W. Santa Monica Blvd., located just east of La Brea Avenue.

Planned is over two dozen electric-vehicle charging stalls, two outdoor movie screens and a restaurant with rooftop seating, according to city documents. Renderings show a retro design complete with bold red accents and neon lights.

But feature films won’t be on the bill at this theater: Instead of full-length movies, the Tesla theater plans to show clips or short films that line up with a 20-to-40 minute charging session, LAist reported.

The business will be open 24 hours a day, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Musk first publicly floated the idea of marrying an “old school drive-in” with a Supercharger location in 2018. At the time he said it would also involve roller skates and rock n’ roll; it’s unclear if those pieces of Musk’s dream will be a part of the finished product.

The Tesla drive-in is being built on the site of a former Shakey’s Pizza. The facility will have among the most Superchargers of any Los Angeles location: The nearest large-scale charging facilities are in Santa Monica and just outside downtown Culver City.

This isn’t the first time Tesla has built special amenities around a charging center. A Supercharger location in Germany opened in 2022 with a pool, others include a video-game lounge and a Tesla merchandise store, Forbes reported.

While there are drive-ins in Glendale, Torrance and Industry, the city of Los Angeles has been without its own ozoner since the closure of the Van Nuys Drive-In in 1996, according to Cinema Treasures.

Tesla hasn’t announced when the drive-in will open.
