Wright reveals Chelsea stars that were missing in Everton loss

Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright believes Chelsea missed the creativity of two star players during their loss against Everton.

The Blues conceded in the 22nd-minute as Everton captain Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a penalty.

Edouard Mendy was penalised for knocking down Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box.

The loss ended Chelsea’s 17-game unbeaten run, during which they’ve beaten Sevilla and Rennes in the Champions League.

After the match, Wright said that Frank Lampard’s men were lacking in creativity.

Speaking on Match of the Day (via Metro), he said: “No one was comfortable on the ball.

Maybe as a game, if Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic were playing – a little bit more creativity – they might have got something. But it wasn’t happening.”

Both Ziyech and Pulisic were left out of the squad after picking up hamstring injuries.

They’ve looked sharp when available but have struggled to maintain consistent fitness in the first team.

Fellow pundit Alan Shearer, meanwhile, praised the Toffees for their performance in the victory.

He said: “Their closing down was really impressive.

“Whenever anyone was on the ball for Chelsea, they were closed down straight away and didn’t have any space. I thought Everton were brilliant.

“It was just one of those days [for Chelsea]. They could have been there, I thought, for another two or three hours and they wouldn’t have scored. You’ve just got to forget that and move on to the next game.”

The defeat leaves Chelsea on 22 points after 12 games in the Premier League. They could be overtaken by Southampton and Leicester City, with both teams in action today.

Lampard has been impressed by his young squad this season. Their inexperience shows at times though and the English manager wants fans to know they are a ‘work in progress’.

Chelsea’s next match is against Wolves away from home on Tuesday.
