The ‘new Joel Matip’ reacts to Liverpool transfer rumours

Schalke defender Malick Thiaw says he was “happy” to be linked with Premier League outfit Liverpool earlier this year.

There were rumours back in March that the Reds wanted to sign Thiaw with a report claiming that they could land him for a bargain £7m, due to a release clause in his contract.

The 19-year-old, who has been labelled the ‘new Joel Matip’, has only made six Bundesliga appearances so far in his career at Schalke, scoring one goal.

Despite rumours he could leave for Liverpool, Thiaw ended speculation at that time by committing to a new contract until 2024.

On the Liverpool speculation, Thiaw told Schalke TV: “Of course you’re happy when big clubs are after you.

“But it was actually clear to me that I would stay at Schalke.”

Liverpool have had several injury issues in defence this season with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez picking up serious injuries.

There has been speculation that they could dip into the January transfer market to bring in cover at centre-back – but another report has ruled out such a move.

However, Sport Bild claim that the Reds still have interest in Thiaw and that they ‘maintain regular contact with him through scouts’.

Speaking about scoring his first senior in October in a 1-1 draw against Stuttgart, Thiaw said:  “I like scoring goals even though I’m a defender. It’s one of the best emotions you can feel. I would have been happier about my goal if we’d won the game. The team is more important than the individual.”

Just about all of the greatest uncapped Premier League players ever were pursued by England. And only four of them were English.
