Liverpool boss Klopp justifies favourable VAR decisions

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has justified the VAR decisions that went in his side’s favour in their 1-0 victory over Wolves, claiming they “were on the other side of decisions at Aston Villa”.

Sadio Mane’s winner was originally ruled out for a handball by Adam Lallana in the build-up, but was overturned by VAR after the replays showed it had in fact struck the midfielder’s shoulder.

The Wolves players also claimed Virgil van Dijk had used his hand before his pass for Lallana, but the replays were inconclusive.

VAR was involved again moments later, as Pedro Neto’s equaliser was chalked off as Jonny – who crossed for the Portuguese forward to finish – was millimetres offside just before.

Klopp told BBC Match Of The Day: “It was a tough test and rightly so. We play for big stakes, and try to be successful and be as good as possible.

“Wolves are used to a tough rhythm of games. They made some changes. First half we were good and controlled the game, but I can imagine Wolves were not happy with the VAR decisions. However, the momentum went with them after that moment. We had nothing to do with the decisions.

“The second half they changed a bit. We were not fresh enough in mind to react. Alisson wanted to make the game quick, and nobody else wants to it to be! Football is like life. Sometimes you are 100% ready and sometimes not. It was a big fight today.”

Asked about the VAR decisions by Sky Sports, Klopp said: “We are in December and coming into January. Players standing around that long waiting is not good. I would prefer if referees going to the screen.

“I think the first situation it would help. But if you think offside, then it takes a while. But with the possible handball it could be quicker. That’s how we do it England at the moment. We were on the other side of VAR decisions at Aston Villa. These things happen, nobody likes it.”
