Lampard names the two Chelsea players he ‘relies’ on

Frank Lampard says he depends on senior players such as Thiago Silva and Olivier Giroud to boost the Chelsea dressing room.

The Blues are currently third in the Premier League table, two points behind joint leaders Tottenham and Liverpool, while they are topping their Champions League group.

Lampard has previously praised the impact new signing Silva has made on the Chelsea squad and now he has emphasised the importance of the likes of the Brazilian and Giroud on the younger members of his group.

BIG WEEKEND: Chelsea v Spurs, Robertson, Man United, Arteta

When asked about the support he gets from the senior pros in his side, Lampard told The Athletic: “That’s hugely important. When you’re a coach or manager you have a huge responsibility, but you also don’t sit in the dressing room.

“I hardly ever go in. So you rely on people like Olivier Giroud, who is a great example because he’s not always playing.

“Maybe some senior players would turn away, but Oli and Tammy have a great relationship. Because of the lack of crowds, I can hear the substitutes behind me and Oli is constantly praising Tammy when he holds the ball up or does some good centre-forward play.

“That’s special. With someone like Thiago Silva, who doesn’t have the language, it’s through performance, the way he prepares and trains and his serious nature. That’s an instant rub-off.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole recently admitted that he misjudged the impact Silva would have at Stamford Bridge this season.

“Unbelievable. Out of all the signings, when he came in, I knew he’s been one of the great defenders of our generation, but at 36 – you worry,” Cole said on BT Sport. “Traditionally, players of that age coming into the Premier League, it’s very difficult.

“The Premier League is a different beast now.

“I don’t think they make centre-halves like him now, apart from van Dijk, he’s the best in the league, maybe there’s an argument for it.

“For Rudiger, Zouma, or Christensen next to him, he sets the standards.

“That’s the level you want to get at if you want to class yourself as a world-class centre-half.”
