Guardiola: ‘We did everything but we just couldn’t score’

Pep Guardiola believes that his Man City side created enough chances to beat West Brom comfortably on Tuesday night.

Guardiola’s side had all of the possession throughout the 90 minutes. But they found it difficult to break down a resilient West Brom side.

City did take the lead after half an hour, though. Raheem Sterling pulled it back for Ilkay Gundogan and the German international made no mistake as he put his side in front.

The home side appeared to be in control, but West Brom equalised on the brink of half time. The ball fell to Semi Ajayi in the area before he turned and shot at goal.

His effort was deflected into the net by Ruben Diaz to level the game up heading into the break. It was defence vs attack in the second half, as City did all they could in attempting to find a breakthrough.

Sam Johnston was forced into making a couple of superb saves late-on. But West Brom held on to pick up a valuable point on the road.

This result leaves City sixth in the Premier League after their second successive draw. They are five points off Tottenham and Liverpool at the top of the league.

Speaking with Amazon Prime Video post-match, as cited by BBC Sport, Guardiola insisted that his side did ‘everything’ but score a second goal:

“We didn’t create much in the first half, they had a lot of people back, we struggled to win the second balls. In the second half, we did everything we just couldn’t score.

“We created enough to win the game, 26 shots I think, you just have to put the ball in, We are struggling with that. We have to be optimistic.

“You don’t have to be so clever to see the gap between this year and previous years [in our results]. It is not confidence, Sergio Aguero is injured for four months, but we create chances, we are there we just can’t score.

“It is not about the points [to the top of the league], you have to win games like this. We know it, we drop points. These are the ones you have to win. It’s not far away to the top of the league but you have to beat West Brom at home. There are a lot of games left.

“This situation is weird for everyone. We deserved to win the game but we didn’t win it.”
