Deeney slams VAR ‘big club bias’ in Man Utd victory

Troy Deeney thinks VAR is displaying “big club bias” with some of its decisions this season after controversy in West Brom’s loss at Man Utd on Saturday.

West Brom – without a victory since promotion back to the Premier League – made life difficult for Man Utd, who eked out a 1-0 win thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty after the video assistant referee’s intervention during a frantic start to the second half.

Man-of-the-match Sam Johnstone produced fine saves to thwart Anthony Martial and his former club in a goalless opening period at Old Trafford, where Slaven Bilic’s men looked set to open the scoring straight after half-time.

Referee David Coote pointed to the spot after adjudging Fernandes to have taken down Conor Gallagher in the box but overturned his decision after reviewing the incident on the advice of VAR.

Peter Bankes came to the Portuguese’s assistance again shortly afterwards, having spotted Johnstone strayed off his line when saving his penalty following a Darnell Furlong handball.

Fernandes fired home the retaken spot-kick to ensure United’s wait for a Premier League win at Old Trafford did not extend into December.

“I still think there is big club bias when it comes to VAR,” Deeney told talkSPORT. “You have still got the human element of the referees that are operating it.

“It happens, look at the Man United game, it happens. The penalty has been changed. He gave a penalty, went over there, wasn’t sure and still took the penalty away.

“If that was Man United and the other way around that penalty stands.

“It’s never been 50-50 it’s probably more 70-30 in their favour, it’s not doing it on purpose, we have got it this season in the Championship.

“We are the big team in the Championship, we scored a goal that didn’t go over the line and they gave us the goal because the bigger team, screaming loud enough is going to get more attention than if it was a lesser team.

“It’s just what happens, it’s human nature, I am not getting on the referees it’s something that has happened over time.”
