United Way Diaper Drive Seeks To Help Families In Need

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — One in three families in America struggle with the need for diapers.

According to the National Diaper Bank Network, 5 million infants and toddlers live in low-income families, and government programs, including food stamps, do not provide funding for diapers.

That need is why the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region is currently running a diaper drive.

Rebecca Lull, the organization’s director of community impact, told Patch that diapers are the No. 1 request the United Way receives through its Gift-in-Kind program.

“Households experiencing diaper need are an average of 19 diapers short a month,” she said.

“The Diaper Drive will help alleviate some of that need,” Lull said, “and United Way continues to help throughout the year through our Days of Sharing Gift-in-Kind program.”

With a goal of 100,000, the United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region has received, as of Tuesday, a little more than 3,100 diapers from 16 donors and nine fundraisers.
