San Ramon Teen Raises $2K For Women In Need

SAN RAMON, CA — A Dougherty Valley High School junior started a nonprofit that sells reusable tote bags that help raise money to buy hygiene products for women in local shelters.

Spoorthi Bedadam founded EmpowHer, an organization devoted to supporting women and girls in need. Bedadam creates and sells reusable tote bags with hand-painted designs, both to improve the environment, and to raise money for EmpowHer’s main initiatives.

Proceeds from the bags go to purchasing essential sanitary products like sanitary pads, soaps, combs, and body creams that are given to women in shelters like Tri-Valley Haven and Shepherd’s Gate. Since founding EmpowHer her freshman year, Bedadam has raised roughly $2000 and donated over 10,000 essential items.

“For many women in underserved communities accessing sanitary products is a constant struggle,” she told Patch. “I wanted to create a solution that not only empowers the environment but also addresses this pressing need, giving women the dignity and support they deserve. Knowing that we are helping women meet their basic needs is incredibly rewarding. It motivates me to keep going and find even more ways to make an impact.”

For her efforts, Bedadam has received the Presidential Service Award in 2020, 2021, and 2022. She is looking to expand the program in order to help more women.
