Rest Rooms, Other Buildings Put Into Place At Windermere Field Complex
VERNON, CT — The rest rooms and snack shack were put into place Thursday at the Windermere Avenue Athletic field complex shared by Vernon and Ellington.
The former farmland bordering the Hockanum River just on the Ellington side of the border was acquired by Vernon in 2022. Seeding began two years later and, currently, three of the four proposed fields are fully covered with natural grass.
The first piece to be put into place Thursday was the rest room building. A crane picked up the 86,000-pound concrete and steel structure like it was a toy and carefully lined it up with pipes that lead to the septic and water source systems.

The rest rooms are located at fields 2 and 3 at the south end of the complex.
Next up was the storage shed that goes with the bathroom building. They are technically two halves of one structure, Vernon Mayor Dan Champagne told Patch at the site.

The last structure on Thursday’s to-do list was the snack bar, which will be located closer to Field 1.
Field 4 close to the river has yet to be seeded.
Champagne said the premise behind the complex is to not only expand the local athletic field inventory, but to build a facility worthy of hosting both youth lacrosse and soccer. It has already been used heavily for the latter with lacrosse predominantly using Vernon Center Middle School and Legion Field.
