Hawk Trapped In Netting Freed By New Canaan Animal Control
NEW CANAAN, CT — A hawk stuck in the netting of a Buttery Road home’s chicken coop was rescued Wednesday afternoon by New Canaan Animal Control.
Animal Control Officer Sean Godejohn said he was called to a local property around 3:30 p.m., where he found the trapped bird.
The hawk was likely trying to grab one of the owner’s chickens when it got caught in the netting of the coop, Godejohn said.

“It is common for animals to get tangled in netting,” Godejohn said to Patch. “I’ve pulled birds and other animals out of soccer netting and garden netting.”
Godejohn gently lifted the hawk by its ankles and used a multi-tool to cut the netting around the bird’s talons.

Once the hawk was free, Godejohn gently placed the uninjured animal upright, carried it over to the center of the yard and safely released it, he said.
Godejohn also noted red shoulder hawks like the one he rescued Wednesday are likely the most common hawks he encounters in town.
“Hawks in general are a very common sight in New Canaan,” Godejohn said. “Some do migrate, but some will stay in Connecticut all year.”
Godejohn asked residents to be aware of how animals in town tend to get caught in nets.
“If you have any soccer nets, I recommend to take them down when not in use,” Godejohn said.”If you have fencing around your chicken coop that is a netting-type material, I would suggest to use metal chicken wire instead.”
