DARIEN, IL – A Darien alderwoman on Monday wanted to know what could be done about piles of items being placed in front of a coming business, even before it opens.
Last month, the Salvation Army told Patch that its local store was moving to the old CVS Pharmacy building, southeast of Lemont Road and 83rd Street.
Its lease at the Chestnut Court shopping center, 7511 Lemont Road, ended Sunday. The organization said its grand opening for the new place was Nov. 15.

At a Darien City Council meeting, Alderwoman Mary Sullivan said people are already leaving donations outside the building.
“I just find it extremely unsightly,” Sullivan said.

Alderman Eric Gustafson, who has complained about dumping at the AmVets donation site near Walmart, said it seems this is the trend at such places.
“I don’t know how you avoid it,” he said.
Dan Gombac, Darien’s municipal services director, said he planned to meet with the management after the store opens. He wanted to find out how the Salvation Army would police the dumping.
He said Darien could require screening to block off the unsightliness. Ultimately, he said, the city could issue citations.
“Worst-case scenario, we will have them block off their driveways with some type of bollards and chains,” Gombac said.
