Raising Cane's Requests Change To Milford Parking Requirements

MILFORD, CT — Raising Cane’s, a popular chain known for its fried chicken, is requesting to alter minimum off-street parking requirements.

Raising Cane’s is planning on adding its third location in the state at the 1455 Boston Post Road site, a former Milford Bank branch.

The existing parking standard is one space per 75 square feet of floor space at a restaurant. Raising Cane’s is seeking to change that to one space per 150 square feet of floor space specifically for fast-food restaurants.

The current owner of the property, 1455 BPR, LLC, noted in a petition requesting the change that there is no distinction in the parking requirements for fast-food restaurants.

“In light of the existing definition, as well as modern drive-through habits, it makes little sense to require a ‘fast-food restaurant’ to provide the same number of parking spaces that a regular sit-down restaurant would be required to provide,” the petition stated.

The petition also argued that the change to parking mirrors regulations in other municipalities.

City Planner David Sulkis said in the staff review/comments section of the document that the “proposed change is consistent with the Plan of Conservation and Development for modernization of our parking standards.”

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the change at its meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

Raising Cane’s was founded in 1996 in Baton Rouge, LA, and has since expanded to more than 600 locations in the U.S. and overseas. The business employs around 50,000 people and is known for its focus on chicken fingers.
